In most cases, a valid U.S. passport is required when taking a cruise. Though some "closed loop" cruises (those that begin and end at the same U.S. port) may not require a passport, we recommend bringing yours in case of an emergency, such as an unexpected medical air evacuation or the ship docking at an alternate port. Your cruise company may require you to have a passport, even if U.S. Customs and Border Protection does not.
